Temotu Nende constituency has a new Member of Parliament. Mr Aston Mewa surprisingly unseated former MP Patterson Oti.

Returning Officer for Nende constituency Joseph Waipora made the announcement at 1:30 p.m today from the Lata amidst an anxious crowd after having spent more than half the day waiting for the announcement to be made.

The announcement of the result was earlier foiled after a group of supporters threw stones at the counting center roof top and looted a retail store at downtown Lata station.

Election security officials for Ndai Island, Lau/Mbaelelea Constituency, have been found after losing their way to the remote polling station in bad weather and strong currents.

Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Polycarp Haununu, said he was extremely relieved to hear confirmation that the people were safe after being discovered on Santa Isabel, some 100kms off course.

“We were very concerned to discover that officials had not reached Ndai Island to conduct today’s delayed polling - and were lost,” Mr Haununu said.

Twelve former members in the last Parliament have retained their seats while 3 others were unseated as counting progresses around the country on Friday.

Among the 12 re-elected members are former Prime Ministers’ Manasseh Sogavare (East Choiseul) and Snyder Rini (Marovo) while former Prime Minister Francis Billy Hilly was unseated from his previous Ranongga Simbo constituency.

In Malaita, former MPs Manasseh Maelanga (East Malaita), Mathew Wale (Aoke Langalanga), Toswell Kaua (Baegu Asifola) and Peter Tom (West Kwaio) have retained their seats.

Lata Police has requested extra police reinforcement to help control the current tense security situation following an early morning rampage at Lata by angry supporters of a high profile candidate who was unofficially unseated.

Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Tom Hagegurimane made the request after police were unable to quell the rampage due to the inadequate numbers as well resources to contain angry crowds.

Meanwhile, Police authorities in Honiara have deployed a Police Response Team (PRT) by helicopter this morning to assist in controlling the situation.
